Installation
In the fifteenth century, at the start of the agricultural year, candles called ‘Plough Lights’ would be lit in churches to bless farm workers and encourage a good future harvest. Coinciding with Epiphany—the Christian festival whose Greek name ‘theophany’ means the ‘shining forth’ of the divine, records suggest some Plough Lights would be kept burning all year round to bring good luck to the farming community.
This neon wheat sheaf was installed at Micklefield St Mary’s Church, West Yorkshire, in January 2025.
