Performance

Many seasonal customs involve the use of fire, especially during the winter months. Burning is an easy metaphor to understand, but the smoke can be an actor in its own right, variously veiling, polluting and purifying. With vape shops on every street corner, I’m thinking about the new rituals of smoking, and their links to existing traditions associated with the new year, from resolutions to Plough Monday.
