and you too have come into the world to do this

In 2021, the same year that I was finally able to go freelance as an artist, my father unexpectedly passed away.

For the first time in my life, I didn’t feel able to go out and make work: I wanted to be alone with my grief. Having never picked up a paintbrush, I found myself drawn to painting—a medium which I immersed myself in, nearly exclusively, for 18 months.

This body of work, retrospectively titled, ‘and you too have come into the world to do this’ is the result.

Part of this collection was created while on residency at Analogue Farm, Lancashire, August 2022. Selected pieces were exhibited at South Square, Bradford in May 2023, as part of the solo show, something invisible and powerful and totally uncontrollable.

“I think it’s really important to be comfortable with our own company and to find ways of living well and generously, on our own.”
